How to Create and Deliver Intelligent Information

Welcome to the Second Round of Our Interview Series “Five Questions for…”.

We asked our members of the iiRDS consortium what motivates them to actively participate in the consortium. Read what they are hoping for from their commitment to the standard for intelligent provision of user information and how the companies are at the same time preparing themselves for the upheaval in the world of Industrie 4.0. This time we have five questions for Dr. Matthias Gutknecht.

Dr. Matthias Gutknecht
Business Development Manager, STAR AG

Matthias Gutknecht is Business Development Manager at STAR AG. He has over 25 years of experience in research, consulting, solution development, sales and implementation of content management solutions and services. Until 2013 he led the development of services at Xerox Europe and before that he worked in research in artificial intelligence and machine learning.

  1. As the iiRDS Consortium was founded for the further development of the standard, what was the motivation for you and your company to join?

It was particularly important that the standard focuses on the integration of technical information and that it also uses semantic information markups. STAR has 20 years of experience with semantic information management and is excited that iiRDS relies on semantic concepts for the integration and exchange of information from different sources.

As the standard can expect broad support and has a good chance of becoming an international standard, we are very interested in the standard not only solving the problem of information exchange, but also taking a big step towards semantic information management.

  1. The roadmap contains numerous plans and ideas: what are you most hoping for from the Consortium?

We hope to have a good set of reference samples of iiRDS packages as soon as possible so that we can rely on a good basis for the implementation. Some things that are not quite clear in the standard or that can be interpreted in many ways can be illustrated by reference samples. We consider this a central issue. In addition, a validation tool is of particular interest to us in order to be able to send a package and check whether everything is accurate.

  1. What are you looking forward to in the internal work of the Consortium?

With our participation in the Consortium, we are primarily looking forward to receiving the reference samples and the validation tool soon in order to drive our implementation forward. The further development of the standard is then, of course, the next step. We hope that with our comprehensive know-how in semantic content management, we will be able to help ensure that on the one hand, the standard is adapted worldwide and, on the other hand, generates great benefits.

  1. Which practical implementations do you see for using iiRDS in your company – now and in the future?

STAR has launched a new generation of a content delivery portal called “PRISMA”, which provides Smart Content Services. End users receive not only content without search effort, but also functions and services that support and lighten the workload for the user. If PRISMA is used for the support and operation of a plant, a lot of external information is used for components installed by different suppliers. The semantic envelope of iiRDS helps to intelligently integrate supplier documentation into such assistance systems.

  1. Where do you see iiRDS three years from now?

We are convinced that iiRDS as an exchange standard for technical information will meet with international interest and acceptance. This applies above all to after sales, and not only to manufacturing: we also see great potential in the process industry and the construction sector. The current trend in this area is called Building Information Modeling (BIM), which means that plant documentation can be created right from the start and made available at the end of construction, so that buildings with components from numerous suppliers can be maintained more easily. In any event, iiRDS is a pioneering approach for the intelligent provision of information across a product life cycle.

Many thanks, Dr. Matthias Gutknecht, for these informative answers!
